It’s almost November…

Whereas to many November means the growing of facial hair to do something about men’s health (Movember), to me it is about writing. That’s right friends, NaNoWriMo is just around the corner! I am ready for a month of excitement, worrying about word counts and drinking more and more coffee and energy drinks.

The basic premise of NaNoWriMo is to write a novel of 50,000 words in a month. If you want to learn more about the idea, whom it benefits and all that good stuff please follow the link above. I am not here to sell the virtues of the idea or to force people to sign up (though you really should). No, I am here to let you know what my plans are for the month.I have participated and won for the last four years. Winning just means I managed to reach the word count of 50,000 words btw. I have often thought about posting my daily word count meeting writings but so far never have. This year I am changing all that. Why? Honestly this year I need the help and support to keep me honest.

A few caveats. I approach NaNoWriMo as a bit of a purist. Some people are happy to plan out their idea before the first day of November. I am not. In fact I’m not really happy to have decided on what story I actually want to write! For me NaNoWriMo is not about getting a complete story out. It is a brain storming period where I will give birth and kill off as many characters and ideas as I can, all in the loose confines of one structure. For those expecting to read a cohesive narrative with one MC, reading my NaNo offerings may not be for you.

So on day one I will decide on a setting, genre and basic idea of the kind of story I wish to tell. It is unlikely I will get a word count day in, but I am usually very behind the daily limit until the story starts to flow. I will post my musings, maybe even a brain storm diagram or two.

I am not looking to achieve anything out of this. This is not my great grab at fame and / or fortune. I just want to write and share the experience of my NaNoWriMo with as many people as I can.

To that end I am hoping to take this project multimedia. I might do some vlogs, I might try streaming as I write, I might paint my story on a wall for some reason. All that comes after the writing though. The whole point of this is to keep me going to the 50,000 words, not to provide ample distractions to keep me from the written word. If I do vlog or stream I will make sure links are provided here.

If you are a fellow NaNoWriMo, why not find me on there as well. It would be great to meet and chat, throw around ideas and attempt to keep each other going. Or catch me on Twitter if you prefer.

Here’s hoping I can make 2017 another win, and maybe even help a few others over the finishing line too!
